National Case Study Competition in Health Education®

What is the National Case Study Competition in Health Education®?

Every year, NCSCHE® brings together student teams from leading universities to compete in solving a real-life challenge. Three weeks prior to the competition, students and their advisor will be emailed a community-based public health education case. Students work independently to develop a resolution to the issue and a presentation for a panel of judges. Teams will have free reign to address the issue as they see fit, but generally they will have to show competence in the NCHEC Core Competencies for a Health Education Specialist. Students present to a panel of judges, given 20 minutes to present their case study. After presenting, teams will be awarded Gold, Silver, or Bronze designation based on the content of their case resolution. There will be one undergraduate team and one graduate team to receive a Best Program Design award based on judge reviews and scoring.

2025 National Case Study Competition

The National Case Study Competition in Health Education®, Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE), Eta Sigma Gamma (ESG), and the  National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc.  (NCHEC) are pleased to continue their partnership to expand the National Case Study Competition in 2025. All four entities will be collaborating to continue the tradition of providing students with a top tier professional development experience.

Registration is now open for the 20th Annual National Case Study Competition in Health Education being held at the SOPHE 2025 Annual Conference from April 15, 2025 (on-site) to April 16, 2025 (online). Graduate and undergraduate health education student teams will compete in presenting a response to a challenging scenario that demonstrates their health education specialist competencies, uses of technology, and emerging methodologies.

The registration fee for the case study competition is $300, but for teams composed of ESG members from a recognized ESG chapter there is a $50 discount!

For more information, case study guidelines, and to register a team for the case study competition, visit the SOPHE website. The registration deadline is March 15, 2025.

If you have questions about the competition, contact Karl Larson, NCSCHE® Executive Director at ncsche@gmail.com

Become a NCSCHE Judge!

1. 2025 will mark the 20th anniversary of the undergraduate competition; year 8 for the graduate student competition.

2. The competition will be held both onsite at the SOPHE conference in Long Beach, CA, Tuesday, April 15, 2025 (note this is the day BEFORE the conference begins) and online April 16, 2025 (and 17th if necessary). There are morning and afternoon sessions each day, depending on registration numbers.

3. Last year the competition hosted 25 teams. We anticipate at least that many this year, generating a need for 18 judges, 9 judges onsite in Long Beach on Tuesday April 15th (again, note this is 8:00am the day BEFORE the conference begins), and 9 judges available online on April 16th. The competition works best when we have judges from a broad spectrum of settings, including management, programming, government, and academia. Long Beach area professionals are especially welcome to join us.

4. Each session requires a commitment of 4 hours for the judges. Onsite, the sessions run 8:30am-12:00pm, and 1:00pm-5:00pm local time. The online sessions may shift in start-finish times based on the time zone of registered teams and the judges. The 3-hour east coast/west coast time differential may require a later start and finish time for judges.

5. Judges are assigned to only one session, and will review 5 teams in their 4-hour block.

6. There are 2-3 judges assigned to each session.

· Each judging team will have at least one experienced judge who will serve as the lead judge to assist those committing to the competition for the first time.

7. Judging is done with a very detailed evaluation rubric that has been aligned with the NCHEC standards.

8. The case study is developed by the NCSCHE team. The case study writers are not judges.

9. The case study and the evaluation rubric will be sent to you at least one week before the competition for you to become familiar.

10. An online meeting of judges and Dr. Larson will occur Monday evening April 14. Specific time is TBD.

11. When teams are done presenting to judges, the judges will discuss strengths and challenges, assign scores based on the rubric, and assign the team either Bronze, Silver, or Gold status. Results are entered into the Qualtrics form after each team has competed. One program design will be identified as best of the competition.

12. There is no pay for judging. However, judges can request a letter from Dr. Larson stating their commitment for submission to NCHEC for Cat. II credit, or their workplace for service documentation.
