Certification Exams CHES® and MCHES® Certifications Eta Sigma Gamma members are either 1) students enrolled in a professional preparation program which aligns with the National Commision for Health Education Credentialing Inc., (NCHEC) Areas of Responsibility or 2) Are professional members who work in the field of health education and promotion. Our members are uniquely positioned and prepared to sit for The Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES®) and The Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES®) exams. ESG encourages its members to become CHES® or MCHES® certified. The CHES® and MCHES® exams measure the "possession, application, and interpretation of knowledge in the key Areas of Responsibility for Health Education Specialists delineated by a National Health Education Specialist Practice Analysis II 2022 study known as the HESPA II."(NCHEC, n.d.). The exams are offered twice a year during October and April and consists of 165 multiple choice questions. Maintaining Your Certification To maintain your certification for CHES® or MCHES®, you must 1) pay the annual renewal fee of $70.00 each year to NCHEC and 2) engage in a minimum of 75 Continuing Education Contact Hours (CECH) or CEUs over the course of the five year certification period. NCHEC offers information on how to maintain your certification and provides an ongoing list of Continuing Education Credit Activities to maintain certification.
