Dr. Mal Goldsmith

With sadness we report the death of Dr. Mal Goldsmith, who passed away in June 2021 at the age of 68. Dr. Goldsmith was born in Brooklyn, New York and has long been recognized for his major contributions to health education. Dr. Goldsmith earned his bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York at Brockport, his master’s degree from Indiana State University, and his doctorate from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.

Dr. Goldsmith taught health education courses at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville from 1978 until 2010. While in Edwardsville he served as faculty adviser for the Gamma Delta Chapter of Eta Sigma Gamma. In addition, Dr. Goldsmith served as the national president of Eta Sigma Gamma from 2001-2003 and served as Eta Sigma Gamma’s Director of Chapter Development. Dr. Goldsmith was the recipient of the Eta Sigma Gamma Distinguished Service Award and the Eta Sigma Gamma National Honor Award. 

In addition to his service for Eta Sigma Gamma, Dr. Goldsmith served on the board of the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing and was the chair of the Coalition of National Health Education Organizations’ Task Force on Ethics. In addition, Dr. Goldsmith was recognized for his professional contributions by the American School Health Association and the American Association for Health Education.

Dr. Goldsmith made tremendous contributions to the health education profession and he will be greatly missed. Eta Sigma Gamma extends its condolences to his wife Holly, his daughter Sierra and his brothers Steve and Lon.
