Welcome Back Eta Sigma Gamma Students, Alumni and Chapter Leaders

Our hope is that you are safely returning to your places of school, work, and communities with more hope and peaceful days ahead.

This comes to you in the week we celebrate and observe the legacy and activism of Martin Luther King Jr. and it is also the Inauguration of the 46th President Biden and Vice President Harris bringing hope and healing.  Eta Sigma Gamma stands firm that the horrific events at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th were an atrocity for the American people and democracy. This was a terrorist attack and the insurrectionists have no place at our Capitol or any other place in this Nation.  This continued violence is rooted in historical and systemic racism. For us in Eta Sigma Gamma the work we do and can do more of in our communities, Chapters, campuses, states and other organizations is imperative. Together we will seek further social justice actions, stronger policy work, conversations, and education that continues to dismantle White Supremacy. We are committed to working even harder with the new administration, further strengthening our collaborations with public health leaders and organizations, and bring our Chapters meaningful opportunities to learn, dialogue, and further the mission of our organization to the “promotion of the discipline by elevating the standards, ideals, competence and ethics of professionally prepared individuals in Health Education”.

We also know you are all continuing as health educators to battle a virus. We know that many of you have served your communities as essential workers, navigated months of virtual classes and work, juggling the health and well-being of your families and friends, while addressing inequalities in your communities around access to healthcare, food, financial insecurities and housing shortages. We strengthen when we come together and share our stories, best practices, and coping strategies to prevent compassion fatigue and burnout. Take care of yourselves and each other. We will continue to need a strong workforce in the coming months and years to battle this pandemic.

Our National ESG Board is working on many initiatives, new projects, and strategic planning for the coming academic term. We are engaged in Strategic Planning, working on our outreach to Chapters, and stay tuned for more information about the SOPHE/ESG Annual meeting this spring. Watch for opportunities to share your Chapters engagement and how to involve you in either a call for abstracts, manuscripts, webinars, awards and scholarships. Your Board is also working to connect virtually with your Chapters for further development opportunities, networking, and learning opportunities this spring. Stay tuned and be sure to keep your addresses updated in the Membership portal to be sure you are receiving all the member updates.

As your President and as your Executive Board of Directors we vow to be better listeners, continue to unlearn and learn better understand our roles only your leaders, colleagues, and humans in our community and nation to move forward with hope and restored faith.

Sincerely,
Keely Rees, President
Robert Bensley, Vice President
Holly Moses, Immediate Past President
Denise Seabert, Secretary/Treasurer
Julie Soules, Executive Director
